Background of the Study
Peer tutoring, where students help each other learn by explaining concepts and supporting academic growth, has been recognized as an effective method of enhancing learning outcomes in educational settings (Ahmed & Ibrahim, 2024). In nursing education, peer tutoring can provide students with an opportunity to reinforce their own knowledge, develop communication skills, and deepen their understanding of complex clinical concepts. The interaction between peers creates a collaborative learning environment that has been shown to improve academic performance, enhance critical thinking, and foster a sense of community within the student body (Bashir et al., 2023).
At Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, nursing students often struggle with complex medical and nursing knowledge, requiring them to develop both theoretical and practical skills. Peer tutoring programs have been introduced in the institution to support students who may need additional academic assistance. While peer tutoring has been widely recognized as beneficial, there is limited research on its specific impact on nursing students in this setting. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of peer tutoring in enhancing nursing students' academic performance at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
Statement of the Problem
Peer tutoring has been implemented in various nursing programs to support students' learning; however, the effectiveness of such programs in the Nigerian context remains underexplored. At Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, there is no clear evidence to suggest how well peer tutoring impacts students' academic achievement, clinical skills, or overall learning experience. Without comprehensive evaluation, it is difficult to determine whether peer tutoring is a sustainable and beneficial approach for improving academic performance among nursing students.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of peer tutoring in improving nursing students’ academic performance at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
2. To assess the impact of peer tutoring on students’ clinical skills and practical knowledge.
3. To explore students’ perceptions of the peer tutoring program and its influence on their learning experience.
Research Questions
1. How effective is peer tutoring in enhancing the academic performance of nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki?
2. What impact does peer tutoring have on the clinical skills and practical knowledge of nursing students?
3. What are the perceptions of nursing students regarding the peer tutoring program at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki?
Research Hypotheses
1. Peer tutoring has a significant positive impact on the academic performance of nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
2. Nursing students who participate in peer tutoring programs show greater improvement in clinical skills compared to those who do not participate.
3. There is a significant relationship between students’ perceptions of peer tutoring and their academic success in nursing education.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, and evaluate the effectiveness of peer tutoring in improving academic and clinical performance. The study may not be applicable to other institutions that do not have peer tutoring programs or have different educational environments. The study will focus on peer tutoring in nursing education and may not address broader institutional factors.
